Stimulants As Treatment Medicine Instead Of Drug Abuse
By Madonna Camille Mamuri

A stimulant is a kind of drug which generates more than the usual alertness or awareness. As the name suggests, stimulants act on the central nervous system to elevate moods in the form of euphoria or in some cases, it results to extraordinary bouts of energy due to an increased level of brain activity.

Despite the drug's danger of being abused, stimulants or uppers are ideally formulated for the treatment of various disorders. Narcolepsy, which is a neurological condition characterized by a sleeping disorder, is treated by the use of stimulants. A narcoleptic sleeps at any random opportunity, regardless of the place or time because they do not have control on where or when they would fall asleep. This poses great social danger for those who suffer from this disorder; hence, stimulants are prescribed to narcoleptics to counteract abnormal states which lacks consciousness.

For people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), stimulants are used to promote concentration. In United Kingdom, ADHD is known as Hyperkinetic Disorder. It is a kind of disorder which occurs at some stage in a child's growing up stage and can retard development. ADHD affects about 5% of the world's population and is described by a consistent behavioral pattern of hyperactivity, inattention, inability to focus, forgetfulness and poor impulse control. Aside from psychotherapy, stimulants are common prescribed medication for people with ADHD.

Stimulants are also used for to assist weight loss. This kind of stimulant can come in the variation of phentermine which is an appetite suppressant and can boost endurance. In some cases, stimulants are also used for the treatment of depression. Arguably, the euphoria produced by some stimulant variants can lead to recreational use but the legality of these kinds of narcotics is highly prohibited.

Stimulants are not restricted to some kinds of oral medications and controlled substance. They are also present in everyday activities. Caffeine, one of the most commonly used stimulants, is present every time we have a cup of our favorite morning coffee. Caffeine is also present in soda beverages and nicotine which can be found in cigarettes and other tobacco products.
